LAGOON'S VICTORY

gay rose runs second SPRINT TO WAHINE REIHI TWO FAVOURITES SCORE DUST UP'S GOOD DIVIDEND Having her first race since she started at Paeroa in October, the lightweight Lagoon, outsider but ono of the field of seven, brought off a surprise in the Goldfields Cup at the opening 0 f the Thames Jockey Club's meeting yesterday, paying double figures for a Tvin. Lagoon assumed the lead just after entering the straight and scored convincingly from the each-way favourite Gay Hose, who finished very fast after becoming awkwardly placed in the middle stages. Although the weather was fine, the course was soft after recent rain and the times were slow. There were numerous seratchings and two of the events attracted fields of only four. The public commenced the day well when the eachwav favourite Professional won the opening event, but the only other first fancy each way to succeed was Enlightenment, although Huskie was a successful place: favourite. Most of the winners were at good prices, but the best dividend of the day was returned by Dust Up, who finished third in the Trial Handicap. The attendance was fairly good and the totalisator handled £'9216 10s, compared with £8632 10s on the first day last year, an increase of £584.
