CHINESE GARDENERS
VANISHING COMMUNITY Melbourne is contemplating a little sadly the vanishing of a familiar fignru —the Chinese market gardener. In 10 years the number who held stands at the Victoria Market hus decreased by 25 per cent, and before very long, so the experts say, there may bo no more. The Chinese gardeners, once a familiar sight on every little plot of ground in tho odd corners of the suburbs, are survivors of tho great Chinese migration in the gold rush days. Once there were as many as 35,000 Chinese in Victoria, but restrictive legislation, the return to the homeland and death have reduced their numbers to-day to a couple of thousand. Of the present gardeners many have no families and the young Australianborn Chinese is no more anxious than his white fellow-citizen to slave in a market garden from dawn to dusk. He prefers commerce.
