YOUNG MAN'S OFFENCES THREE YEARS' PROBATION [BY TELEGRAI>H—FIIESS ASSOCIATION] CHRIBTCHURCH, Thursday Probation was extended to Henry Alan Moray Smith, company agent, aged 28, who appeared before Mr. F. F. Reid, S.M., for sentence on five charges of theft irom tlie Xew Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company at Rakaia of sums totalling £153 9s 10d. He also appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing £4l from William Wilson Carruthcrs. Counsel for Smith, Mr. R. A. Young, said Smith maintained that the defalcations had been brought about Infrequent excessive calls on his salary. Ihe magistrate said it appeared to be clear that the company paid Smith an adequate salary for a man of his age and position and had paid all reasonable expenses. Smith had endeavoured to live on a sea la far beyond him. On the first charge, Smith was convicted and admitted to probation for three years, a special condition being that, he should make restitution of £194 9s lOd and £2 expenses within six months. On the remaining charges he was convicted and discharged.
