OFFICERS CHOSEN
CHANCELLOR RE-ELECTED THE HON J. A. HANAN NEW PRO-CHANCELLOR The present chancellor of the New Zealand University, the Hon. J. A. Hanan. M.L.C., of Invercargill, was re-elected unopposed by the university senate yesterday lor a term of three years. Mr. Hanan was nominated by Mr. W. .J. Morrell. The. nomination was seconded by Mr. H. F. von liaast. of Wellington, and adopted amid applause. " 1 thank you for the confidence and esteem which you have shown toward me," said Mr. Hanan, in reply. " 1 know that I can rely upon your help and goodwill to assist me in discharging my responsible duties with becoming intelligence and dignity. I am sure that with your assistance we can still make improvements in the important work that is entrusted to us, and add to the reputation of the senate for encouraging t lie studies tor which it is responsible." Mr. von Haasfc was elected to the vacant position of pro-chancellor. Mr. |\ Levi was elected to succeed him as honorary treasurer. Dr. W. P. Evans was re-elected as one of the t\\o coopted members of the senate, his teini having expired. Long Service on Senate Mr. Hanan was originally elected to the office of chancellor by postal ballot last March to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the late Professor .T. Macmillan Brown. lie has been a member of tho senate since 1917, and held the office of pro-chancellor trom its creation in 1927 until his election to the chancellorship. Mr. Hanan was Minister of Education and Justice and Attorney-General in the short-lived .Mackenzie Ministry of 1912. He held the portfolio of Education in the National Cabinet from 1915 to 1919. and those of Justice and Immigration for shorter periods. On vacating the Invercargill seat, which he had occupied from 1890 to 1926, he was appointed to the Legislative Council. Mr. von Haast has a longer record of service in the senate than any other member, with the exception of Professor J. Rankine Brown, and served for many years as its honorary treasurer. He is a son of the late Sir Julius von Haast, who was a senator in the early days of the university. Educated at Christ's College and Canterbury College, lie took the degrees of M.A. and LL.B., and entered upon the practice of law. . . During a six years' sojourn in England he was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn and he is also a member of the Victorian and New South Wales Bars. Ho has lectured extensively on commercial law, and is the president editor of the New Zealand Law Reports. Mr. von Haast has been a member of the governing bodies of Canterbury and Victoria University Colleges and served a term as chairman of tho latter. He has taken a keen interest in international and Pacific affairs, and has been a representative at conferences at Shanghai and Toronto. He is one of the chief New Zealand contributors to the Round Table. Boards and Committees The election of the board of moderators (entrance examination) resulted in the unopposed return of Professors J. Rankine Brown, W. P. Evans, F. F. Miles and H. B. Kirk and Messrs. E. J. Parr, T. R. Cresswell and W. Thomas. The following were elected as the committee on appointment of professors of the university:—The chancellor, pro-chancellor, vice-chancellor (Professor T. A. Hunter), and Messrs. W. J. Morrell. H. D. Acland, P. Levi and T. U. Wells. The vice-chancellor was elected to represent the senate on the selection committee for the Shirtcliffe Scholarshins Professor H. G. Denham and Mr. H. .T. I). Mahon, who are about to visit Britain, were appointed to act with Dr. A. J. Harrop as delegates to this year's conference of the universities of the Empire. Tho chancellor and vice-chancellor were appointed to represent the senate in the lately-constituted Conference of University Colleges. Dr. E. Roberton, vice-chairman of the Auckland Grammar School Board, was re-elected by the Senate as its representative on tho board. .
