WAR MEMORIAL
PROGRESS IN CHRISTCHURCH MODEL SHIPPED FOR CASTING Work on the war memorial to be placed in the Christchurch Cathedral grounds has advanced so far that the plaster model for the bronze statuary group has been shipped to England. The bronzes will be cast by a London firm specialising in this work, and they should be completed for return to New Zealand by the end of this year. The memorial should be completed on its site on the north side of the Cathedral in 1937. The memorial consists of a large cross in Portland stone, at the base of which is an allegorical group of sculpture. This comprises six heroic figures in bronze, ranging in height from Bft. Gin. to 10ft. 6in. The central figure of the group, a winged Victory, is 16ft. high. The general design is by Mr. George Hart, who is the architect for the memorial, and the sculptural work has been done by Mr. W. T. Trethewey, of Christchurch. Mr. Trethewey has been occupied on the work for the last two years, and is going to England to supervise the casting of the group.
