RAILWAY FREIGHTS
HAMILTON COMPLAINTS [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON. Thursday Objection to the new schedule of freights adopted by the Railway Department on the railage of goods to Hamilton is expressed by Hamilton businessmen. It is stated that it now costs 5s lid a ton more to rail A class goods from Hamilton to Taumarunui, a distance of 91 miles, than it docs from Auckland to Taumarunui, a distance of 174 miles. The adjustments in the rates o-jve substantial reductions on goods sent from Auckland to stations between Ivukuhia, four miles south of Hamilton, and Ongarue. Freights on other classes of goods are in favour of Hamilton It is pointed out that with respect to A class goods no consideration is given to the fact that freights to Hamilton have already been paid before they are consigned to southern stations. One businessman stated that no one objected to a reduction in freight rates, but he considered that there should bo no differential treatment. The changes made would impose a handicap on Hamilton, which he thought was unfair.
