CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE CRITICISM BY PRESIDENT "They have got their knife well and truly into the Chamber of Commerce," said Mr. Gainor Jackson, president of the council of the Auckland chamber, at a meeting yesterday, when referring to the City Council. A letter was read from the town clerk, Auckland, which indicated/that the chamber's letter concerning the widening of the footpaths on Grafton Bridge had been received. "Wo are'not likely to get much satisfaction there," added Mr. Jackson. To Mr. J. A. C. Allum's suggestion of a deputation to the City Council, Mr. Jackson said that those who had waited on the council previously had been received with little short of insults. This had occurred to him on the last two deputations. It was not a personal matter, added Mr. Jackson. In the January issue of the chamber's journal another reference is made to the City Council. In regard to air transport, it is stated: —"Already some transport difficulties in Auckland have assumed serious proportions because certain developments were not sufficiently foreseen by previous generations of Aucklandcrs. Are we going to allow future generations of Aucklandcrs to hurl the same reproach at us!' When the Auckland City Council merely 'receives' a communication from a responsible commercial organisation stressing the importance of adequate direct road access by other than circuitous routes to any areas set aside a s air-landing places, it makes one wonder whether the 'powers that be' a re sufficiently alive to their responsibilities in this matter."
