SURF LIFE-SAVING
ACTIVITIES AMONG CLUBS PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS In view of tho Auckland championships a month hence considerable activity by way of special training is taking place in all surf clubs throughout the province. Tho A\ hakatane Club this year will be responsible for tho organising work of the carnival, which will bo held at Ohope beach on February 16. The Bay of Plenty Clubs, Opotiki, Whakatane, I'apamoa and Mount Maunganui, are reported to have strong teams, which will be competing. AVaihi will be sending a men's team ftrtd is jilko expected to have a girl s team, which will contest the girls' provincial rescue and resuscitation championship at present held by the Tauranga girls' team. Tho Milford and Opotiki girls' teams will also be competitors. Waitemata, holder of the Speedo Shield for rescue and resuscitation teams championship, will defend its title against teams representing all tho Hav of Plenty clubs. The Eastern !'nited, I'iha 'and Milford Clubs will also be competing. Takapuna and North Shore will be represented in other events.
Mr. J. li. Wilson, who was recently elected captain of the I'iha Club's surf boat, is considering taking the boat to Ohopo for tho championships in order to stimulate interest in surf boats in tho -Bay of Plenty. Wuihi is investigating the possibility of a boat for its beach, where it would prove popular with tho large, crowds of holidaymakers.
The newlv-formed Mount Eden Club has been regularly patrolling the .Motuihi beaches during tho holidays. I'nder tho leadership of .J. O'Brien, formerly of the Castlecliff Club, Wanganui, the team is- making progress. M. C. Smith, a member of the famous Manly Club, in Sydney, is a member of Mount Eden and bis experience should bo most helpful..
