DESTRUCTION OF PUNGAS

Sir. —With reference to the letter published in your correspondence columns under the above heading, may I state that the Waitemata ElectricPower Board staff is in possession of strict instructions to minimise to the greatest possible extent any damage to native bush. It should be realised that in carrying 11,000-volt lines through bush country*>some damage is absolutely unavoidable, in spite of the greatest of care, and it should also be realised that trimming is done as a necessary safeguard and not as a wilful and unconsidered act. The board has gone to some trouble on many occasions to carry out its expressed policy of preserving intact so far as possible any native bush in its area, and while, as the society's letter states, "jockeys" have been erected with this end in view, such a course in this particular case was not practicable. Acting-manager. J. R. Miller.
