RELIEF CAMP SPORTS
GIFT OF PLAYING GEAR CHEER IN ISOLATION Ono of the difficulties of single relief workers engaged in the development of small farm areas in isolated districts is to find suitable recreation in the evenings and during week-ends. It is recognised that these men are doing valuable work and in order to help theip a small committee was set up in Auckland some time ago. Thiß committee consists of the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, Mr. John Alexander and Mr. W. Slaughter, officer in charge of employment in the Auckland district, and its chief aim is to provide the men with social amenities.
In the past it had been possible to supply some of the camps with gramophones and records and they have been assisted ttf obtain radio sets which have enabled them to listen into the national stations. Last winter, through the generosity of a number of Auckland business firms, these distant, camps were provided with footballs. These gifts were greatly appreciated as they enabled the men to organise games among themselves and in some cases to play local teams. Now, through the goodwill of Sir Alexander Young, Ministfer of Internal Affairs.'it has been possible to provide sets of cricket material to 14 of the most isolated camps. These sets, which are largely composed of New Zealand-made articles, are made up of two bats, two balls, one set of wickets, one pair of pads and a pair of wicket-keeper's gauntlets. These sets are to be forwarded to the camps within the next few days.
