PAPATOETOE INTERESTS

CONTROL OF CYCLISTS LEGISLATION DEFERRED Advice that pr6posed legislation for the control of cycle traffic had been crowded out of the last Parliamentary session was received by the Papatoetoe Town Board from the Commissioner of 'Transport, Mr. J. S. Hunter, on Tuesday night. Mr. Hunter said it had been hoped to have legislation introduced, but time had not been found for it. The matter was, however, being kept in view, and in the meantime local bodies could deal with it through their powers under by-laws. With a view to minimising the danger to children from passing traffic on the main highway the traffic inspector, Mr. A. Breed, suggested that pupils leave school by the gateway leading to the side street. It was decided to submit the recommendation to the school authorities. The possibility of the recreation ground being chosen for the Auckland Cricket Association's "country week" at Christmas was advised by the Papatoetoe Cricket Club. It also stated that the association was favourably impressed with the playing facilities and was arranging competition matches. The board decided to grant all facilities required at the usual charges. The board decided to co-operate with the Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club in the official opening of the floodlighted stadium at a special open meeting. One guinea was voted to the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children.
