WOliK AGAINST TEE CLOCK BLUE GARTER GALLOPS WELL HEST PARTICULARLY FIT [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] HASTINGS. Tuesday Most of the horses engaged at the Hawke's Bay Spring Meeting at Hastings on Saturday were sent out against the clock to-day. Master Cyklon, against the bit, ran four furlongs in 535, while Sunny Maid, under restraint all the way, ran about the same time. This mare has improved with her Labour Day race. Hest, a particularly lit mare, was only jogging alongside Shirred Itibbon to run five furlongs in 63}s. Hest was unlucky at the end of the month, but should soon make amends. Blue Garter, with 7st. in the Baddle, ran the best gallop of the morning from a time viewpoint, registering 49s for half a mile. Black Magic took 1.5 for five furlongs. Speed, back to form again, made light of the task of doing a round on the plough in 1.41. Mohua ran three furlongs in 38s. Maine had her first run along since coming back from Auckland last week, to do the seven in 1.35. She arrived back looking fit and muscular. Hard Times, a fancied Trial Stakes candidate, easily defeated Silver Tide over four furlongs in 51s, but the former could have bettered the time. Version and Larwood, who are being taken from hero up to the Waikato meeting, pleased by sprinting four in 49Js. For a hurdler, Isms did well to gallop five furlongs on the plough in 1.4}. Ho is ..a poor jumper, galloping with his head near the ground. But for this he would furnish into a tip-top hurdler.. There was nothing impressive about Sybil Song's defeat of Peggy Defoe over six furlongs in 1.22. Morning Quest • slightly snaded Cawbeen in a half-mile sprint, taking 51s. Royal' Shift beat. Journet by five length's over the schooling hurdles of onco round in 1.39, the best registered at Hastings for some time. Lavina, Contact and Huntette were in that order over four furlongs in 50Js, for the former to do it very easily. The White Pearl mare ran away from Chat in a half-mile spurt, taking 525. Royal Minstrel showed a decided improvement when defeating Silver River comfortably over half a mile in 49fs. The Grasper, working well within himself, ran his round in 1.44. Soho and Peter Beckford indulged in a working gallop only, to run five furlongs in 71s. CALIENTE UNDER CLOUD LAMENESS AFTER WORKING [by TELEGHAPH —OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Before being sent out to gallop with Tout le Monde at Riccarton this morning, Caliente appeared to be favouring a leg, and she became so lame after galloping that veterinary attention had to bo secured for her. The real extent of the trouble was not known to-day, but judging by her condition after working she seems to be a doubtful proposition for the New Zealand Gup meeting. ~ . .
