FIFTY YEARS AGO
BTRENGTH OF POLICE FORCE have been made recently of the inadequate strength of the police force to properly patrol the suburbs ot Auckland, and it is interesting to read that the same state of afFairs existed half a century ago. The Nkw Zealand Herald, pf November 5, 1885, says:— ''Numerous complaints are made as to the scanty protection by the police. This can scarcely bo otherwise, as owing to the very limited number of men who are available it is almost impossible to give any efficient protection outside the city boundaries. As a matter of fact, there id a larger ratio of popula:tjon to each policeman in Auckland than in any other centre of population . the city demands an increase in the . itrength of the police force."
