BOXING RING
AUCKLAND'S NEXT MATCH QUESTION OF PRELIMINARIES The Auckland Boxing Association is endeavouring to arrange a first-class carnival for December 2. The principal bout will be a professional heavyweight contest of ten rounds between Val Luttrell, of Hastings, about 13st. 101b., and S. Wells,. of Whakatane, about 15st. Luttrell is well-known in the professional ranks and Wells is an unbeaten amateur. Efforts are also being made to arrange a return match between Billy Purdie and J. Arbuthnot, of Wellington. It will be remembered that Arbuthnot defeated Purdie in the final of the welter-weight class at the recent New Zealand championships. The statement recently published by the Dominion Sports Club that it was anticipated that amateur boxing contests would, in the near future, be staged as preliminaries to professional wrestling contests, was considered by the committee of the Auckland Boxing Association, and it was resolved, after mature consideration: — (1) That the proposal, if agreed to, would not bo in the best interests of amateur wrestlers, as this would take from them the only opportunity amateur wrestlers possess of competitive public contests. (2) The amateur wrestlers may resent the inference that their exhibitions before the public have not been of an attractive nature. (3) It is tho established duty of organisations controlling professional sport to foster and encourage the amateur side of the sport they have the privilege. to control. Tho Auckland Boxing Association, therefore, is of the opinion that amateur wrestlers have a definite claim to the preliminary bouts staged in conjunction with professional wrestling contests.
