LABOUR DAY HOLIDAY VARIETY OF ATTRACTIONS MANY SPORTING FIXTURES The Labour Day holiday falls on Mon« day, providing a long week-end, which j. generally regarded as the. official commencement of the summer sports season. Shops and offices will close at midday to-day and will not reopen until Tuesday morning. In buying supplies for the week-end, housewives will have to provide for the additional holiday. •Sports bodies and other organisations are making the most of the extra day, and an extensive programme has been arranged for the week-end. Racegoers will be catered for by the Auckland Trotting Club's Spring Meeting, which will open at Alexandra Park to-day, and will be concluded on Monday. Racing enthusiasts in the province will be provided for by the Waikato Hunt Club's one-day meeting at. Cambridge on Monday. Some bright cricket is anticipated to- | day, when the first round of the Auck- | land Cricket Association's senior championship will be concluded. The principal game will be between I'niversity and Eden on the No. 2 wicket at Eden Park. The other match at Eden Park is between Grafton and King's Old Roys. Ponsonby and Y.M.C.A. will meet at Victoria Park, and Parnell and North Shore at North Shore. A new series of games will be played 011 Monday. Golf and Bowling The main golf event will be a tournament at the Titirangi links, when competitions will be held for the Hi.slop and Titirangi Cups. A combined handicap tournament will bo conducted bv the Pupuke Club, while another tournament will be held at the Maungakiekei Club. The championships of the Remuera Club will be played over the weekend.

Several bowling clubs will hold their official opening ceremonies, and club games will be played at the various greens. Several tennis clubs also will open, and inter-club hardcourt competitions will be commenced. As usual an athletic meeting will bo held at the Domain Cricket Ground on Monday, when some of Auckland's leading athletes will compete. The Call oi the Sea Of interest to wrestling enthusiasts will be the two matches to be staged during the week-end. To-night George Walker will meet Fezul Mohomet at the Town Hall in a bout arranged by the Dominion Sporting Club. "Lofty" Blomfield will meet Cestoldi at the Town Hall on Monday night, under the control of the Auckland Wrestling Association.

Large numbers of people will be making trips by train, car or boat during the week-end. For many yacht and launch enthusiasts, Labour Day will mark the unofficial opening of the cruising season, while numerous excursion! have been arranged by bus, launch or steamer to various parts of the Gulf, and by train to all points of interest in the North Island, including Rotorua, Te Aroha and Whangarei.
