MAORI YOUTHS GUILTY

RECOMMENDATION TO MERCY Three young half-caste Maoris, lan Talbot, aged 18, Edward Hawke, aged 18, and Raymond Talbot, aged 20, stood trial before Mr. .Justice Callan in tho Supreme Court yesterday on charges of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under 16 years of age. There were two charges against Raymond Ia I hot and one each against the other two accused. The offences were alleged to have taken place in the early part ot this year at Panmure. Mr. It. Meredith appeared for the Crown, and Mr. Sullivan conducted the defence. Mr. Meredith said that admissions of the offences had been made by all the accused, and the facts were not disputed. The defence was that the _ accused had reasonable grounds for believing that the girl was over 16 years of age. After a retirement of about half an hour, the jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy. His Honor said he had made up his mind abort the case and had no intention of boing severe. The accused were remanded for sentence, bail leing renewed.
