UNSETTLED AND ? SQUALLY EARLY IMPROVEMENT LIKELY The weather report and forecast for New* Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, were as follows: —The depression covering the Dominion has made extremely glow eastward progress and is now centred off the Canterbury coast. An anticyclone is situated over eastern Australia and should reach New Zealand by Sunday. The indications are for moderate to strong winds of gale force in places, north-westerly to westerly north of Westport and Akaroa, elsewhere southerly and southerlies soon extending over most of the Dominion. Seas high on the west coast of the North Island, elsewhere rather rough to rough. In the eastern Tasman Sea moderate southerly winds and rough seas. The weather should be unsettled and squally, with rain in most districts. Some heavy falls are especially likely in the South Island and thunder is pVobable in places. Temperatures are becoming cold and snow may fall on some of the ranges. Conditions should be improving on Sunday, and present indications are favourable to fine weather prevailing in most districts on Monday.

SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST FURTHER HEAVY SHOWERS The Government meteorologist issued to the Hkrald last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province:—Strong westerly winds backing later to southerlies. The weather is likely to be unsettled and squally, with heavy showers. Temperatures are becoming colder. Seas rough to high.

YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland. —A fresh to moderate westerly wind was blowing yesterdav and light showers were experienced during the morning. Although the weather had improved considerably the conditions continued unsettled. * The barometer remained unusually low and was practically steady at 29.50 in. during the 24 hours. The maximum temperature was 62.8 degrees. The barometer was rising slowlv and last evening read 29.37 in. Dunedin.—The weather yesterday was again overcast and unsettled with occasional light showers. A light southwesterly breeze prevailed and the maximum temperature was 51 degrees.
