LEG-BEFORE DECISIONS ADOPTION OF NEW RULE COUNCIL FAVOURS FIJI TOUR A request tho New Zealand Council for the new leg-before-wicket rule to be observed in first-grade games, in view of the fact that it will be used in Piunket Shield and M.C.C. matches this season, was received at last evening's meeting of the management committee of the Auckland Cricket Association. The rule rends as follows:—"If with any part of his person (except his hand) which in between. wicket and wicket, he intercept a ball which, in the opinion of the umpire at the bowler's wicket, shall have been pitched in a straight line from the bowler's wicket to the striker's wicket or shall have been pitched on the off side of the striker's wicket and would have hit it, the decision will be leg-before-wicket." After a short discussion, it was agreed, on the motion of Mr. P. Shaw, to adopt the new rule from the commencement of the third series of first-grade matches on Saturday week. It was also decided to send a copy of the new. rule to each member of the Umpires' Association. Mr. W. G. Miller reported that Mr. W. Luke had been appointed a member of the committee to judge the senior fielding competition for" the Hellaby Shield. On the motion of the chairman, Mr. W. R. Fee, it was agreed to admit unemployed to Eden Park for club matches at tho reduced charge of sixpence. The New Zealand Council forwarded ft copy of a letter sent to Mr. E. C. Beale with regard to the latter's request for permission to assemble a team to visit fciji later in the season. The council advised that it favoured Mr. Beale's proposal subject to certain conditions. It had been pointed out to Mr. Beale that first-class players likely to be required for Piunket Shield and M.C.C. matches should not be included in his side, which is to be known as E. C. Benle's touring team. No financial .responsibility for the team would be accepted by the council, while the personnel of -the side must be submitted for approval. A letter wan received by the committee in which Mr Beale stated that he had noted the conditions imposed. It was decided to wish Mr. Beale every success in his proA letter was received from the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, stating that, with a view to securing general co-operation in the consideration of plans for _ the adequate commemoration of Aucklund s centenary in 1910, a conference representative of all interests likely to be concerned in the project would be held at the Town Hall on November 11. The association was invited to appoint, two delegates to represent it at the conference. It was decided to appoint tho chairman and Mr. N. C. Snedden to represent the association. An application from the Auckland Business Houses' Association for affiliation w-ns granted. Transfers of three former Suburban Association players, dealt with by the standing committee, came up for confirmation. It was agreed to confirm the transfers of v. C. Butler and R. C. Aickin to University, and C. G. Broberg to Papatoctoe. The transfers of C r . Childs, Grafton to Pamell, and R. D. Coatcs, Pamell to Hospital, were approved. > Mr. H. Duncan reported that the coaching of club plavers woulcr commence next week. Clubs had been circularised asking for the nomination of promising colts for 'coaching under L. P. Townsend, the Derbyshire professional. With regard to til© annual Country Week tournament, it was decided to write to Mr. W. 11. Johnson asking him if he would be prepared to manage tho competition. It was decided to hold a Town and Country match this Beason. the date to be arranged later. The hours of play for Labour Day were fixed as f0110w5:—3.45 a.m. to 1 p.m.. 2 p.m. to 4.15 p.m., 4.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m. It was agreed that 2.30 p.m. be observed as the time for the introduction of the new ball, and that the rule concerning the restriction, of batting time be waived.
