CYCLE TRAFFIC PROBLEM
CONTROL ON HIGHWAYS LEGISLATIVE ACTION URGED The view that the control of cycle traffic on the Great South Road should be under statutory legislation rather than local body by-laws was expressed last night by the Papatoetoe Town Board. A letter was received from the Automobile Association (Auckland) urging that by-laws be enforced in regard to the lights on cycles and the "common practice" of cyclists riding several abreast on the main highway. It also requested that the adequate lighting of the main road, which was considered to bo poorly lighted in parts, should be considered by the local bodies concerned. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Nicholson, said he understood the Minister of Transport, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, had promised to bring down legislation on the issues raised. Regarding lighting, he considered the board's 73 chains of the main highway were adequately lighted. Members concurred in the view that legislative control was desirable. _lt was decided to reply to the association in these terms and to make representations to the Minister.
