YOUTH FOUND GUILTY RECOMMENDATION TO MERCY [BT TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION* 1 PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday In the Supreme Court to-day lan Bruce Cossar-Miller, aged 19, of Feilding, was found guilty of placing an obstruction on the railway line at Pending on July 28. The case was the outcome of the railcar iu which the general manager of railways, Mr. G. H. Mackley, was travelling striking a boulder weighing ;}7lb., and large enough to derail the train. Fortunately the driver saw the obstruction and slowed down, but not quickly enough to avoid striking it. Accused's explanation was that he had taken the boulder to the line with the intention of breaking it. and when his attention was distracted by a rabbit which he and a companion chased, they forgot about the stone. The jury recommended mercy 011 account of accused's mental state.
