WATER SUPPLY SCHEME
AREA IN MANUKAU COUNTY SERVICE FROM PAPATOETOE A proposal by the Hanukau County Council to reticulate its Cornwall Road area from the water supply of the Papatoetoe Town Board created considerable discussion at a meeting of the board last night. The county clerk, in submitting an application for a supply of water, stated that the council proposed to reticulate Cornwall lload and side roads therefrom by a 4in. main and to provide fire hydrants and all iittings. There were about 30 houses in the area. ■ The council suggested that the board should undertake metering and service maintenance. If this proposal were acceptable, it was stated, the council would take steps to raise a loan to carry out the work. The board was requested to state the charges which M ould be made to consumers for supply and service connections. The chairman, Mr. W. J. Nicholson, said the reticulation proposed would eliminate two dead-ends in the board's supply. A few years ago it had been suggested that in such schemes the bonrd should simply sell water in bulk J at its boundary to the County Council. Ht; did not think that desirable. The county ratepayers who had been individually supplied were charged Is 9d for 1000 gallons and The same procedure would meet the present scheme. ! Mr. W. A. Cairns said he favoured l-.ulk supply. He moved that supply be on that basis. Objections were voiced by Mr. E. H. Nolan, who said the motion was not in the board's interests. He moved as an amendment that the council's proposal be accented subject to its consumers paving Is 9d for 1000 gallons. The amendment was carried by three votes to two.
