FORMING EMILY PLACE The present appearance of Emily Place at the end of Customs Street East would not suggest that excavating work carried out there 50 years ago would bo attended by considerable difficulty and risks to human life. That that was so is apparent from the Zealand Herald of October ,16. loco, which stated:— „ " The contract for the breezing Company's reclamations has now been completed by Mr. Allan Maguire. Hie cutting down of Emily Place to ttna the necessary filling-in material lias been a heavy undertaking owing to the treacherous character of a portion 0 the ground and the landslips experienced. Notwithstanding, Mr. Maguire has succeeded without; the loss ox single life. It was predicted that would not do so, but thanks to the ca exercised Mr. Maguire considerii 8 human life before money and clieapn —it has been done. This result has brought about largely through the s and judgment shown by the f° rel ? i of works, Mr. Cummings, who large experience in this class ox wor the Old Country."
