SILTING AT FOXTON
SCHEME TO DEEPEN FAIRWAY VALUE OF PORT TO DISTRICT [by TET.KOnAPn—own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH. Tuesday Contributing local bodies yesterday expressed approval of a proposal to borrow £IOOO to purchase a boat to bo used in dragging operations to keep tho For.ton port fairway cloar. Flood conditions during this winter have caused so much silting that the boats trading between the port and the South Island were held up for days at a time, and, as tho greater proportion of tho cereals requirod in tho district served by the port are imported at a preferential rate, tho decision to make improvements was awaited with concern. Tho Palmerston North City Council also rn.es tho harbour facilities to procure largo supplies of coal from tho South Island. It was felt that the rising revenue of tho board warranted action being taken.
