ITALIANS NOT IMPRESSED
HOPES OF EVADING MEASURES SOME NATIONS FEAR TRADE LOSSES (Received October 14, 6.55 p.m.) * LONDON". Oct. 18 The Rome correspondent of the Daily Mail says that the first batch of sanctions have not impressed Italy, as it is believed that they will not alter the situation. The embargo on arms will be useless, as Italy makes all her own armaments, while Italians are confident that economic and financial sanctions will not be effective, as they will merely necessitate self-sacrifice on the part of Italians. Moreover, they believe that the few essential raw materials will be obtainable from non-membersi of the League or from members not endorsing sanctions, notably Austria, while feeling in Yugoslavia, Rumania and Turkey is growing against t sanctions owing to the fear of lost trade. Italians are rallying to the fight against sanctions, handing over gold articles to the authorities. Husbands and wives are offering wedding rings and sports clubs are sending in trophies and medals.
The Hague correspondent of tUb Times says that Hungarian merchants are busily buying various commodities, including mustard seed, for Italy, and that German exports of coal to Italy are increasing.
