THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE IMPROVED TONE EVIDENT There was nn improved tone on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday, but turnover was rather restricted. Several Government loans registered slight gains in inquiry, but business was confined to a sale in 194G stock, unchanged, at £lO5 12s Gd. With the exception ot New South Wales and Nationals of Australasia banks generally were firmer. Commercials were 3d stronger on sale at 16s 6d, and the preference issue sold at £9 15s. a, gain of 4s Gd during the past two weeks, but over the same period New South Wales dropped 15s to sell at £3l ss. Two sales of New Zenlands were made at tho current price.

Levels for South British Insurances were a shade weaker, but a rise of Is 6d was'recorded in a sale at 90s Gd. Other insurance issues were steady.

Business was well spread over the other classified sections. Auckland Gas were drfne. 3d firmer at 25s 9d, and subsequently holders asked 9d more at 26s 6d. l\ and O. deferred stock found a buyer at 22s 2d, an increase of Is 2d, while current-price business was done in Kauri Timbers. An upward movement occurred in offers for breweries, but Dominions were traded 3d lower at 15s 9d. Electrolytic Zincs were again very firm and a parcel changed hands at 32s Gd, an advance of 9d. Transactions at ruling rates were made in Colonial Sugars, Morris Hedstroms and Union, Oils.
