FINAL LEAGUE TEST NEW ZEALAND OUTCLASSED SECOND SPELL FAILURE MARGIN OF 23 POINTS The third and fin.il Rugby League test match between Australia and Now Zealand at Carlaw Park on Saturday was won by Australia by 31 points to 8. There was an attendance estimated at 20,000. Conditions were irleal and great interest was taken in the came. The Australian backs proved too speedy and outclassed the New Zealand rearguard. New Zealand made a splendid showing in the first half, and at half-time tho score was 8-all. In the second half, however, the visitors played fine football, and New Zealand disappointed, being plainly bewildered by tho brilliant play of the Australian backs. Tho home team's tackling was weak and easy tries were scored by tho visitors. By winning two of tho three tests Australia will hold tho Courtney Goodwill trophy, which was donated for competition between tho two countries. The teams were as follows: — AUSTRALIA Fullback. —L. Brown, who was tackled a foot from New Zealand's line. The Now Zealand forwards did well in the loose and repeatedly broke through with the ball at toe. Tho crowd cheered a nice run by Riley and Kay, and L. Brown carried play to the visiters' line. Ward mado a brilliant save and started a passing bout. Goodwin raced into tho movement and passed to Prigg, who sent an in-pass to D. Brown, who cleverly beat the defence to score a nice try between the posts. He missed an easy kick at goal. Penalties against Australia were frequent, and Satherley missed another goal. From a scrum in tho visitors' twenty-five rletcher raced round the blind side, but his pass to Hutt was forward. Then D. Brown raced from his own twentyfive, only to he tackled by L. Brown after an exciting race for 70 yards. A Fine Try McKinnon dropped a pass after Norman had made a nice run. From a scrum in New Zealand's twenty-five Thicknesso passed to Norman, who made a brilliant run between Riley and Prentice to score between the posts. P. Brown converted. Australia 8 Now Zealand . . . . « • 5 Tetley and Prentice were associated in a nice movement which carried play to the visitors' line. Satherley snapped up in tho loose, and was pulled down on the goal line. Prentice and Kay raced past McKinnon and Tetley returned the ball to Kay, and Riley raced over for a fine try. Fletcher failed to convert, and half-time came with th* score: — Australia 8 New Zealand 8 New Zealand attacked on resuming and Calder and Hutt did some good work in the loose. Prentico was hampered by a leg injury and was not fast onougb to check Norman. However, Riley and Kay raced away, and Mitchell gained useful ground with a nice dash down the sideline. For a time the New Zealand forwards were definitely on top. A splendid tackle by Ward stopped Lawless on tho visitors' line. Now Zealand attacked, but Thicknesse snapped up on the blind sido and passed in his own twenty-five to D. Brown, and Hines scorod a fino try. Curran and Prigg were associated in a good run. The former scored an easy try after Hunt fumbled badly D. Brown converted. Australia 16 Now Zealand 8 Tho homo backs were outclassed by the speed of tho visitors. Norman easily beat Prentice and Riley, and passed to McKinnon, who swerved past Hunt to score a nice try. Brown converted. Australia 21 New Zealand 8 The homo forwards tried hard to score, but tho visitors' passing checked each ofFensive. In easily tho best movement of tho game Norman cut tho defence to ribbons and McKinnon scored a fine try. Brown converted. Australia 26 New Zealand 8 Australia attacked again and just before time Stehr mado a good run and Curran sent Goodwin over for a nice try.
