ST. DAVID'S CHURCH
SEVENTIETH ANNIVERSARY V ___ SUCCESSFUL REUNION HELD There was a large attendance which filled Scots Hall at the social and reunion cf past and present members of the congregation of St. David's Presbyterian Church, held last evening in connection with the church's 70th anniversary celebrations. The minister, the Rev. W. Bower Black, presided. The principal speaker of the evening was the Rev. D C. Herron, minister of Knox Church, Dunedin, who was Mr. Black's predecessor at St. David's. In recalling his 10 years at the church, i Mr. Heiron paid a tribute to the I office-bearers with whom he had been ; associated, and also to the generosity i and devotion of the congregation, who i had given £26,000 for building the new j church, in addition to the usual ex- ! penses. He expressed every confidence that the church would fare as successfully in the future as in the past. On behalf of the present congregation, Mr. Black extended a cordial welcome to past members, Eome of whom had come from distant parts of the country. He referred to his association with the church since 1900, and recalled interesting memories of the days when it stood in Symonds Street. Durj ing the evening Mr. Black announced | that a fine piano had been presented I to the church by an anonymous officebearer. Greetings from St. Andrew's, of which St. David's was an off-shoot 70 years ago,. were given by the Rev. 3?. Gladstone Hughes, oil behalf of sister churches by Dr. Alexander Hodge, president of the Ministers' Association, and for ministers who were formerly members of St. David's congregation by Rev. A. M. Elliife. At supper time a large birthday cake on a table in the centre of the floor was cut by the oldest members of the congregation present, several of whom joined the church more than 50 years ago. Bouquets were presented during the evening to Mrs. Black, to the dcacoeness, Sister Constance, and to Mrs. H. Johnstone, convener of the social committee, in appreciation of their services in the life of the congregation. Items were rendered by an orchestra under Mr. I/en Barnes, tho Balmoral Quartette, Miss M. Caldow, Mr. J. McGregor and members of the Bible classes.
