PENWOMEN'S CLUB
The literature study circle of the Penwomen's Club held a Dickens evening, organised by Mrs. Helep Griffiths, on Tuesday. A scene from the "Old Curiosity Shop" entitled " Mrs. Quilp's Tea Party " was rendered by the Misses E. and M. Horn, M. Matthews, and D. Mortensen: This was followed by a scene from " Nicholas Nickleby," the parts being taken by Mrs. Sydney Smith, Mrs. McKinney and Mrs. McLean. A pageant of Dickens' feminine characterisations was then given, the following taking part: — Sarah Gamp (Miss F. M. Quill), Mrs. Micawber (Miss M. Spicer), Mrs. Gummidge (Mrs. Lucy JBooth), Dora Copperfield (Miss Gwynne Peacocke), Agnes Wickfield (Mrs. Spinley), Rosa Dartle (Miss 0. Young), Norah Gay (Yvonne Curtier), the Marchioness (Patty McLaughlin), Nancy'(lna Lincoln), Betsy Trotwood (Mrs. Matthews), Miss La Creevy (Mrs. de Launay), Mrs. Nickleby (Mrs. Buchanan), Miss Miggs (Miss Briar Gardner), Madame Defarge (Miss Madge Horn), and Miss Monflathers (Miss Ethel Horn). The prize for the best representation of character was won by Miss Marnie Spicer. Songs were rendered by Miss Gladys Stormont and Mrs. Asher, the accompanists 'being Madame Dunn and Mrs. Grace. During the evening a posy of flowers and a small gift were handed to Mrs. Griffiths as a token tef appreciation by Mrs. C. D. McLean (convener) on behalf of the circle.
