LYCEUM CLUB

GARDENING CIRCLE OUTING Under the guidance of Mr. Filmore and Miss Kibblewhite, the members of the Lyceum Club gardening circle spent a very pleasant morning in the Domain gardens yesterday. Among the interesting things they saw were four species of the umbrella or fan ferns in the fernery. One of these was specially interesting, for it is a type common in Malaya, but only found in New Zealand around the hot pools at Wairakei. One theory is that its spores wore brought to this country by migratory birds and only at Wairakei were conditions suitable for its growth. Another theory is thnt it was a relic of the time when the climate of New Zealand was much hotter than it is at present. The hothouses, whore cyclamen and cinerarias presented gorgeous masses of colour, tho potting shed and the nurseries also were visited. In the last mentioned place two beds, one of brilliant scarlet anemones and ono of stock, showed tho success that can be obtained by a careful selection of local seeds. Altogether a most interesting and informative morning was spent.
