NEW SERGEANT-AT-ARMS
BRIGADIER CHARLES HOWARD IMPORTANT STATE POST (Received October 8, 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGB7, Oct. S The King has appointed Brigadier Charles Bernard, D.5.0., to succeed Admiral Sir Colin Keppel, who has resigned, to be Sergeant-at-Arms in Ordinary. It is the duty of this great officer of State to attend upon His Majesty when there is no sitting of Parliament, and for the time of every Parliament to attend upon the Speaker of the House of Commons. Brigadier Howard has been commanding officer of the 12th Infantry Brigade, King's Royal Rifles, since 1932. He was born in 1878, a grandson of the 17th Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire,, and entered the Army in 1898. He served in India and South Africa, being aide-de-camp to Sir Redvers Buller during the South African War. From 1912 to 1916 he was on the staff, and was then appointed to corftmand the 16th King's Royal Rifles. From 1929 to 1932 he commanded the 162 nd East Midland Infantry Brigade.
