OLD MAN'S REQUEST

"Well, give me steak and eggs for breakfast." This was the request of a 70-year-old inmate of the Parke Island Old Men's Home when leaving the dock in the Police Court at Palmerston North, after being informed by the magistrate, Mr. J. L. Stout, that he would have to serve a term of one month in prison. He was charged with being idle and disorderly, and his remark terminated a humorous interlude which broke the customary solemnity of the i Court proceedings. Accused, Thomas Obidiah Owens, had left the home, and when questioned by the magistrate as to whether he would return he declared: "I will not go back there if you pay me £10." The reply by the magistrate was: "We will not pay you £lO, but if you do not consent to go, back to the home we will have to send you to gaol."
