DAMAGES FOR SLANDER
RABBIT INSPECTOR'S CLAIM STATEMENT BY BOARD MEMBER [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHTJRCH. Thursday A claim for £25 damages for slander succeeded in the Magistrate's Court to-day. A. Hoskin, a rabbit inspector under the Banks Peninsula Rabbit Board, claimed £25 from Charles Richfield, a farmer and member of the board, for alleged slander. The words complained of wero spoken at a meeting of the board ns follows: —"I consider the inspector has been too easy. He has handed owners the notices and said they need not be acted upon." Defendant did not deny the use of the words, but claimed that the occasion was privileged. Plaintiff was thereupon required to prove that defendant showed malice. Evidence was led to show that Richfield had on several occasions shown malico in his references to Hoskin at meetings of tho board. The magistrate, Mr. F. F. Reid, hold that malice had been proved, and allowed plaintiff tho full amount of damages claimed.
