END OF LONG HEARING
STATEMENTS BY ACCUSED /'' ' , , : , DETECTIVES' INVESTIGATIONS At the close of a hearing in the Police Court lasting three and a-half days, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday committed Eric Mareo, musician, aged 44, for trial at the next sessions of the Supreme Court on a charge of murdering his wife, Thelma Clarice Mareo, on April 1 5 last. Detective-Sergeant A. B. Meiklejohn gave evidence of Mareo's arrest at the room of Miss Brownlee in Wynyard Street and said that when the charge was read over to him Mareo replied, " Really lOn what evidence ? This is ridiculous. Three further lengthy statements made by the accused were added to the evidence. The exhibits produced by the Crown numbered 48, while the depositions of the 36 witnesses occupied 87 typed sheets jr>f foolscap. Mr. Hubble and Mr. McCarthy appeared for the Crown and Mr. Aekins and Mr. Henry are defending the accused. The Supreme Court sessions will open on October 22.
