SECOND LEAGUE TEST A DECISIVE VICTORY MARGIN OF 21 POINTS HOME TACKLING WEAK ' In tlio second Rugby Leaguo tost match Australia defeated New Zealand decisively by 29 points to 8 in a fast, open gaino at Carlaw Park yesterday. The ground was fast, and the visitors gave an exhibition of spectacular passing, which was a feature of the game. The New Zealand tackling was very weak. Both backs and forwards frequently went high and were easily fended ,off. In positional play Australia outclassed New Zealand whose display was much below that of last Saturday. The homo backs were often caught out of position, and easy tries were made for Australia. The New Zealand forwards played with dash, but failed to keep together. The visitors' vanguard was easily superior on the day, particularly in the loose. Tho visitors' backs impressed, particularly Norman and Thicknesse, who paved the way for many tries. Both Satherley and Lilburne missed penalty kicks at goal. The visitors' forwards attacked strongly, and Lewis and Pearce gained useful ground. Cooke, in attempting to recover, slipped, and Norman snapped up and passed to Stehr, who scored between the posts. D. Brown converted. A few minutes later xMcKinnon easily beat Kay and passed to D. Brown, who with a player in support, boat Cooke to score a good try. The scorer converted with a fine kick. Twice Kay's weak defence allowed Norman and McKinnon to break through and only a dropped pass by Goodwin saved New Zealand. The visitors were attacking strongly at half-time, the score being:— Australia 10 New Zealand 3 On resuming a nice kick by Norman placed Australia well in New Zealand's territory, but Glynn and Calder dribbled back to halfway. Ward cleared nicely and again the visitors forced the home team to defend. D. Brown, Norman and Goodwin combined effectively, but Pearce just missed the final transfer and the visitors lost a try. Play was confined to the forwards, and it was on occasions unnecessarily hard. For the sixth time New Zealand missed goal points from a penalty kick. The Australian forwards were always in support of tho backs and Norman, when pressed, passed to Pearce, to Stehr, and raced 40 yards to score a nico try. D. Brown narrowly failed to convert.
