THE MASSEY CUP FRANKLIN RETAINS TROPHY r ■ DEFEAT OF PUKEKOHE The Rugby competitions in the various country centres of the Auckland Province are now drawing to a close. The principal fixture last Saturday was the Massey Cup match between Franklin nnd Pukekohe at Tuakau, Franklin holding the trophy by winning by 30 points to 6. The following details have been forwarded by correspondents of the HKKAM):— Tuakau By scoring 30 points against Hb opponents' six, the Franklin representatives retained the Massey Cup for another season at Tuakau, when the Pukekohe representatives endeavoured to lift the trophy. The defenders' backs handled well, fielding in good style and passing capably. Pukekohe's backs, on the other hand, gave a very weak exhibition, dropping passes and failing to gather in the ball quickly from field kicks. Pukekohe made some good thrusts, and was able to repeat them right to the end but, by opening up the game. Franklin kept the visitors mainly on defence, Among the Franklin rearguard L. Wright, J. Moore and Rata were particularly in scoring fettle. The two first-named each registered two trios, and Rata secured one, while he also converted three. Tries were also scored for Franklin by Skilton, G. Cathcart nnd Wilson. G-uise sent the Pukekohe backs away, Sandin making a good run and passing to Harland, who crossed at the corner. Te Awamutu.—The annual Rugby match between Waikato and King Country (Mania-poto-Tainui) Maori representatives was played at Albert Park in the presence of a fair attendance of spectators in bright sunny weather. Several changes were made in the teams and the absence of the All Blacks, W .Phillips and L. Kawe, robbed the game of its chief interest. Waikato opened the scoring with a penalty goal by Riki Tukere, but before half-time Koroheke and Emery each scored a try Maniapoto, A. Jackson converting one. Th« pace was faster in the second half and for Maniapoto Turner and Ormsby quickly scored tries, one of which A. Jackson converted. Then Waikato asserted itself and in bright play M. Barton scored a try and converted. Mason scored and N. Jackson converted, and Tupp scored and N. Jackson converted, making the score: Waikato, 18: Maniapoto, 16 However, the King Country forwards were too solid, and Turner, Kite and Ormsby each scored unconverted tries, the match ending:—Maniapoto, 25; Waikato, 18. Mr. R. L. Adams was referee. Thames.—ln an interesting match Huimai, the holder of the K.K.K. Shield, was defeated by the Rest by six points to three. The game opened quietly soon after the start, but Murray scored from a good run. Savage failed with the kick. Huimai, 3, the Rest, 0. The Rest rallied and play went into Huimai quarters. A melee at the corner ended in a scrum about the 25, when Shaw made a good run before passing to Story, who easily crossed the line. Pearson s kick hit the post. Huaynai, 3, The Rest, 3. Huimai forced the pace and The Rest was saved by Forsman's good kicking. A penalty kick by Savage fell short. Pearson took a mark, but was also short in his kick. Kaitala.—The final of the third grade competition of the Mangonui Rugby Union was played at Kaitaia, when the local thira grade team defeated Ahipara by 6 points to 0 For Kaitaia, A. Cade and R. Lee scored tries. Both teams finished in the competition with even points. On the first play-on a draw resulted, but a win in the second play-off gives Kaitaia the Trigg Memorial Shield for this season. Mr. H. Kenning was referee. The final for the_ junior competition was also played at Kaitaia. ' s y' ien Patu, the leading team in the southern section, played Te Hapua. the leading team in the northern zone. These teams were the winners in their sections last year, and Te Hapua won the final, but. this year Patu reversed the score. The only points registered in the match was when T. Wiki scored for Patn. The game was ■particularly fast and, although Patu was much the heavier team. Te Hapua showed better combination, the backs being superior to their opponents. ' Mr. D. Barry was referee.

Paaroa.— I The final of the Paeroa Fugby Union's junior composition was played between Netherton and Hikutaia. These teams had previously played three drawn games. Time was called on Saturday with each team having scored three points. Two extra spells of 10 minutes were played when Hikutaia forced Netherton to touch down, thereby winning by 1 point to 0.

Tauranga.—The Tauranga Rugby Union closed its season when two matches were played against teams from the Manukau Rovers Football Club. The game between Manukau Rovers senior B and Tauranga seniors was fast and spectacular. A Quarter of an hour after the opening M. Hartnett scored, and jus; before half-time N. Svenson sained another try, both being converted by R. Grey, and giving Tauranga a lead of 10 points nt the interval. Halfway through the second spell W. Stevens scored for Manukau, and the game ended in a victory for Tauranga by 10 points to 6. A keen game between Manukau Rovers third grade intermediate and Tauranga juniors was won by Tauranga. G. Fletcher and G. Collard scored in the first half for Tauranga, while Parkes gained a try in the second half for Manukau, the gawe ending: —Tauranga, t>; Manukau, 3. Pukekohe. —Three matches were played in Bledisloe Park, the profits from pte takings being devoted to the funds of this Franklin "Welfare League. Results were:--Pukekohe Primary School. 10. Te Kauwtiata.—A challenge for the Powharama Cup by the Taniwha team was successfully resisted by the Te Kauwhata representatives, who won by 11 points to 0. Hamilton—The 1935 Rugby football season was closed in Hamilton, when the final house games for the Morris Cup were played Railway won the trophy by defeating .kbbett Motors by 11 points to 3. In a primary schools' match Auckland defeated Hamilton by 5 points to 3.
