TRAGIC WRECK
ELEVEN LOST IN TRAWLER AID AT FIRST DECLINED LONDON, Sept. 25 A fisherman at Filey, near Scarborough, listening to a wireless set in his home, tuned in to the trawlers' wave-length and heard a voice say: " Skegness calling all stations. Am grounded." Then the voice stopped abruptly. Scarborough and Flamborough lifeboats were put out in a heavy gale, but could not reach the Skegness. Five lifelines were fired by rocket apparatus, but all were blowu back. The sixth fell right over the Skegness, but no one secured it. The Skegness was pounded to pieces on the rocks, all the 11 members of the crew being drowned. The captain refused lifeboat aid when the ship first went ashore. Listeners heard the dramatic plea by radio by the master of another trawler: "For God's sake, man, let mo summon a lifeboat or you will all lose your lives!" The captain of the Skegness replied that his ship was bumping but he refused aid for half an hour; then it was too late.
