AIR RAID MENACE
SHELTERS IN THE VATICAN ROME'S SIMILAR PRECAUTION (Received September 26. 9.15 p.m.) ROME. Sept. 25 The Vatican's building department has planned a deep anti-gas shelter in, the Vatican gardens for the use of the Pope, cardinals, prelates, soldiers and civilians of Vatican City in the event of an air attack. The shelter will bo linked with the Papal Palace by con-, crete underground corridors. The Government proposes to have similar shelters built beneath Rome. WHEAT PRICES RISE ENGLISH MARKETS - INFLUENCE OF WAR FEARS LONDON. Sent. !« The menace of war is stimulating the buying of wheat and the same fear is causing potential sellers to hold their supplies.
The biggest rise in a, single day for many years occurred in Liverpool yesterday, when the price jumped 3Jd per cental, while the October closing price, 6s 6d (equivalent to 3s 10 4-od a bushel), is the highest recorded for five years.
The City editor of the News Chronicle states that millers fear the international crisis will lead to delays to shipping and higher freight and insurance costs. They have been stocking to cover future requirements, while speculators, who recently were gambling on a fall, have hastened to £lose their commitments.
The Argentine drought and frost have contributed to the firmness of the market, but the war clouds are by far the most important factor. The price of flour has been again raised—to 29s 6d —and an increase in the price of the loaf is almost certain to follow.
CRUISER AUSTRALIA
PROBABLE MOVEMENTS LONDON. Sept. 25 The Sun-Herald news service savs nothing is known regarding rumours in Australia that the cruiser Australia is returning to the Commonwealth, which is thought unlikely. On the contrary, she will probably proceed to Greek ports to join the First Cruiser Squadron, in accordance with the original programme, where there is an excellent opportunity for gunnery and speed exercises under emergency conditions.
The Admiralty's latest report is that the Australia arrived at Alexandria on September 20. The daily movements of warships are not being disclosed during the present international situation
