BLINDED BY HEADLIGHTS
MOTORIST FAILS TO STOP FINE FOR NEGLIGENCE IMPOSED f 11 [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] THAMES, Thursday A sequel to an accident on tho Thames-Kopu road was heard in the Police Court to-day when Edward Hewitt, of Hikutaia, was charged with driving a motor-car negligently. Georgp K. Webb, the captain of a scow, stated in evidence that he was walking to Thames when Hewitt's car camo up behind and struck him. Tho impact threw him over the car's bonnet and on to the running board. Witness said he was on the left side of the road. Defendant, in a statement to tlie policej had said he was dazzled by the headlights of an approaching car. Counsel for Hewitt asked for a dismissal, as no evidence, of negligence had been submitted. The Bench considered there was a case to answer and Hewitt gave evidence that he was travelling slowly. Owing to tho dazzling lights of another car lie did not seo Webb until the impact. The Bench considered that it was Hewitt's duty to have stopped his car if ho was blinded by other lights. Negligence had beon proved. Defendant was convicted and fined 40s.
