NEW LINER STRATHMORE
SPEED AND COMFORT many decorative: features An advance in passenger comfort and luxury is represented in the P. and 0. Company's new 24,000-ton liner, the Strathmore, which, on her trials recently, attained a speed of 22.27 knots. ]n outward appearunce the Strathmore resembles the P. and 0. liners Strathlaird and Strathnaver, which visited Auckland on cruises last summer, although tho Strathmore has only one [funnel, in place of three, giving more space internally as well as on tho upper decks. The first saloon dining room has as its central feature a large needlework tapestry panel depicting the Castle of Glamis, in tho fertile nnd wooded plain of Strathmore, with the hazy outlines of the Grampian Mountains as a background. Tho surround and panelling generally is in bleached Nigerian cherry, with brandings of brown walnut. To the centre of the saloon the roof has been raised and jidvantage taken to introduce a painted decorative ceiling of simple interlacing bands and moulded covings. Seating .accommodation has been provided for 258 passengers. The children's dining room is panelled in Dutch elm, with banding in zebrano, certain features being picked out in bright colours. In the foyer, weathered Bvcamore arid walnut have been used for the wall panelling. A large-scale world rna:p outlined in blue on white pycamore shows the P. and 0. associated companies' trade routes. An arresting feature of the library and writing room in the unusual shape determined by the curve of tho bridge front. Large bow windows are incorporated in the general lay-out of the room, forming the semi-circular sides. From these the ceiling rises in a series of covings. Among the first-class state rooms the vice-regal and de luxe suites are notable for their decorative treatment. There {ire two complete suites, comprising dining, sitting and bedrooms, with a deck verandah, and each room intercommunicating.
Special attention has also been given to, the tourist class accommodation, fj'ho rooms are all panelled in veneers and finished in good taste. In the decoration of the dining sal >on, smoking room, lounge, nursery and verandah cafe special features have been introduced.
