FAST LEAGUE GAME

WIN FOR AUSTRALIA FORTY-FIVE TO THIRTY-ONE [by telegraph—own correspondent] WELLINGTON, Wednesday In a high scoring game the visiting Australian Rugby League team to-day defeated a combined team from Wellington, Hawke's Bay, 'laranaki and Canterbury, at Wellington, by 45 points (eleven tries, six goals) to 31 (seven tries, five goals). The ground was hard and <Justy.

The Australians overshadowed tho combined team in every department of the gamo, and at one stago a win by a much wider margin looked likely. Renewed vigour on tho part of the forwards in the late stages, however, brought results for the home side and made the score closer.

The Kangaroo backs demonstrated that they are one of the finest rearguards yet seen in action in Wellington. Tho backs all possessed pace, speed off the mark and combination which in both orthodox and reverse passing was a revelation. Tho ball was passed snappily and the backing up of the inside men enabled the team frequently to have two or three men to spare.

The visiting forwards showed similar high combination and several of ihem were unusually fleet for forwards. Australia secured the ball from the great majority of scrums in tho earlier stages of tho match and it was not until the local side learned to adopt the Australian tactics that the share was more nearly equalised. In strong contrast to the visitors the combined team was weak in combination, both back and forward. Credit, however, must bo given to individual players for fine displays.

Tho match at Wellington was the second of the Australians' tour, tlio visitors having defeated Auckland at Carlaw Park last Saturday by 16 points to 8. The Australians will return to Auckland to-morrow and will meet New Zealand in the first test match on Saturday. The second test will be played next Wednesday, and tho third and final one on Saturday week. All tests will bo played at Carlaw Park. A match has yet to be arranged for next Wednesday week.
