EGLINTON VALLEY ROAD
COMPLETION COSTS QUESTION OF ALLOCATION A further strong protest against what it terms the Government's move to throw the cost of completing the Eglinton Valley Road on to the Highways Fund is contained in the annual report of the South Island Motor Union.
The report says that, although the completion of the Kglinton Valley Road as one of New Zealand's scenic attractions will no doubt be much appreciated by motorists and overseas visitors, it must be borne in mind that the primary object of the road was to provide a scenic attraction, and the secondary object was to provide work for the unemploved. That work was undertaken by the 'Public Works Department in conjunction with the Unemployment Board. "It is to be deplored that there is an evident move on the part of the Government to throw the cost of the completion of the road on to the Highwavs Fund," continues the report. "Protests have already been made against this move. "Although there may be n difference of opinion whether or not the upkeep of the road when finally completed should be thrown on the Main Highwavs Board, there can be only one ooinion among all right-minded people. That is, that the Government's move to throw the cost of the completion on to the Highways Fund is grossly unfair and inequitable, and it is to he hoped that motorists will continue their protest."
