DRAGGED ALONG ROAD DEAD ANIMALS UNBURIED [froji our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Wednesday Charges of leaving dead cattle un- • buried on land adjacent to a public place and of cruelly ill-treating a cow by leaving it lying in a helpless condition on the side of the road and then dragging it a distance of 100 yards along the road and 40 yards across a paddock by means of a chain to its hind legs were brought against a native, Tautara Weke (Mr. M. 11. Grierson) in the Pukekolie Police Court to-day. Constable C. Robb, of Tuakau, said ho was passing the property when he noticed a bad smell. He found six dead animals at distances from 250 yards to 500 yards from the road. Defendant was asked to bury them, but they were still unburied. On August 27 he saw a cow lying on the side of the road. On August 30 he found marks where the cow had been dragged along the road and following the marks found the' cow still alive inside a paddock. He returned to Tuakau for his revolver, but when he came back the cow had died. Weke appeared and admitted dragging the cow along the road when it was still alive.
.Mr. Griorson said that the constable had been looking for trouble. The dead cattle -were not adjacent to the road and were in the middle of a 750-acre farij*. Defendant was merely a workman on the farm and was not the owner.
For leaving the dead beasts unburied, a fine of £2 with costs 10s was imposed and a fine of £3 with costs 13s was imposed on the other charge.
