THE LEAGUE CODE
AUSTRALIAN TEAM ARRIVAL NEXT SATURDAY STRONG AUCKLAND SIDE Considerable interest is being taken in tho visit of the Australian Rugby League team to New Zealand. The visitors will arrive by the Monterey next Saturday morning and will play tho Auckland representatives in the afternoon. Tho selectors, Messrs. E. It. Asher, W. Mirichnm and H. Avery, havo chosen the following Auckland team to meet Australia in the first match:— Fullback.—N. Campbell (Marist).
Threequarters.—L. Brown (City), A. E. Cooko (Richmond), E. Mincham (Richmond). Five-eighths.—A. Kay (Ponsonby), S. Prentice (Richmond). Halfback. —R. Powell (Richmond), Forwards.—L. Hutt (Ponsonby), H. Quirke (Newion). W. Telford (Richmond), C. Satherley (Richmond), J. Laird (Marist), H. Tetley (Richmond). The team chosen is a very strong combination and includes many players with considerable experience in representative football. The selection of Campbell as fullback comes as a surprise, as he has not been showing his form of past seasons. The Marist custodian, however, has often played to the occasion in big football. Tho threoquarter line is good. In this department Auckland will test the visitors. It is pleasing to see Kay have an opportunity. He is a good type of player, although inclined to be a littlo selfish.
Many enthusiasts may question the inclusion of Prentice at five-eighths, buf, his splondid defence may prove an asset to Auckland. Powell is the of the club halfbacks. The forwards have speed and are good handlers in the loose. Quirke has well earned his inclusion as hooker. The other forwards have had considerable experience and their solid tackling should be a thorn in the side of the speedy visitors.
MATCHES IN WHANGAREI [from our own correspondent! WHANGAREI, Monday Bright and attractive football was provided on Saturday at Jubilee Park by the teams playing under the League code, and the largo number of spectators was well satisfied with the programme. The senior fixture was between a Whangarei representative team and Devonport, tho former winning by 22 points to 16. The ground was dry and in fairly good order, and the ball was thrown about in pleasing style. The Whangarei forwards were heavier than their opponents, otherwise the teams were well matched. For Whangarei tries were scored by T. Jones (2), Bowyer (2). Baker and Parkes. Parkes converted two tries. For Devonport O'Carroll Rhodes and L. Scott scored. Seagar converted two tries. For Devonport Seagar played a particularly fine game, making many openings. He was well supported by Cowan and L. Scott. Knowles, a junior, acquitted himself well at fullback. For Whangarei, Baker, Cross and Parkes were the most prominent of the backs, and Taylor. R. Hollows and C. O'Callaghan were the best of a good set of forwards. The curtain-raiser, played between the Kamo junior and Northcote fourth grade teams, resulted in a win for the former by 19 points to 3. BROADCAST OF PLAY A correspondent, "Surprised Follower." writes as follows;—"At th> end of League broadcast on Saturday the announcer said that as the New Zealand League Council would not permit it tho Australian games would not be broadcast from Carlaw Park. This announcement came as a gTeat shock to us all. I am speaking as one of the many invalids unable to attend these matches. This seems a very hard attitude for the council to take for, according to its own statements, this year has been a record one for attendances, and as every game, including representative matches has been broadcast it does not seem that broadcasting keeps the public at home." When the matter was referred last evening to Mr. C. A. Snedden, president of the New Zealand Rugby League, ho had no comment to maka
