OLD WHALER'S NEW USE
CONVERSION TO TRAWLER WORK ON HANANUI 11. Tlio former steam whaler Hananui 11. is being converted into a trawler at the western viaduct. When the work has been completed the vessel will be used for trawling qn the New Zealand coast, afterwards returning to Auckland with her catches. When she arrived at Auckland from Russell on July 27 it was then intended to fit up tho Hananui 11. for the carriage of oysters from Bluff to Auckland, instead of tho oysters being brought north by train, as is dono at present.
Tho Hananui 11, was built in England in 1910 specially for whaling in the vicinity of tho Bay of Islands. After over 20 years' service in tho industry on tho northern coast of Now Zealand the steamer was withdrawn from commission owing to the scarcity of whales, the result of extensive operations by Norwegian' whalers in the Ross Sea. Her withdrawal from whaling was followed by a long jieriod of idleness before she was bought by her present owner and towed t<s Auckland.
