DEATH OF PIONEER
MRS. R. C. HAMERTON EARLY TARANAKI RESIDENT [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Sunday The death occurred to-day of Mrs. R. C. Hamerton, of Kelburn, who celebrated her 96th birthday on August 24. She was born at Colyton, on the borders of Devonshire and Dorsetshire, and nearly three years later she landed with her parents, Major and Mrs. Parris, at New Plymouth from the barque Blenheim. Mrs. Hamerton was the sole survivor of the passengers by that ship and at her 96th birthday she was still bright-eyed and active and ready to talk of the difficult days of her childhood in Taranaki or to discuss current news with interest and vivacity. Her husband was Lieutenant Hamerton, who was wounded in the battle of Waireka, in 1860, when for the first time in New Zealand colonial volunteer troops served in battle. As Civil Commissioner of Native Affairs, Mrs. Hamerton's father had been intimately concerned with the negotiations over native lands which led to the war. Her husband ultimately became public trustee.
