WIN FOR MATAMATA ' TAURANGA TEAM DEFEATED SUCCESS FOR BAY OF PLENTY JRugby football competitions were continued in various country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon. In, a representative match at Matamata the home team defeated Tauranga bv a wide margin. The following results were forwarded by correspondents of the Hekall): — Matamata.—The Alatamata representative team had an easy victory over Tauranga nt Bedford Park, the final score being 26 to 6 in favour of the home team. Tries for the winners were scored by McLeay, Hallord. Strong, Gtrmanu, W. Carlson and Simpson. W. Carlson converted two tries and Fitzgerald one. Gardiner and McLeod scored for Tauranga. Matamata was superior in all departments, the slow, lob passing of the visitors being quite ineffectual against speedy opposition. A. Simpson, Strong and McLeay were prominent for the winners, while Gardiner and McLeod played well for Tauranga. Tauranga.—Owing to the Rugby representative team being at Matamata no senior competition games were played here. The Green Memorial Cup competition was continued in ideal weather and provided two keen games. Judea defeated Omokoroa by 13 to 7. For the winners tries wore gained by S. Ngatai, W. Tata and H. Kohu, the last-named and N. Hall converting one each. For Omokoroa F. Neilson landed a penalty goal and J. Plummer dropped a field goal. Athletics defeated Matapihi by 9 to 3. E. W. Hitworth (2) and G. Collard scored for Athletics and Hira for Matapihi. Athletics will meet Judea in the final for the cup. Rotorua.—ln a clean, fast and open match played under ideal conditions the Bay of Plenty representative team defeated Thames Valley by 20 points to 6. The first score came late in the spell, Masters, the Thames Valley fullback, scoring a tx-y after following up a speculation kick. In the second spell the match became fast and exciting. Thames Valley adding to its points shortly after play was resumed. Then Bay of Plenty attacked with a series of forward rushes and secured four converted tries before the final whistle. Morgan, of Opotiki, was the outstanding back on the Bay of Plenty side, while Masters, Thames Valley, distinguished himself many times. Mr. R. G. Webb, of Rotorua, was referee. Paeroa.—A representative game between Thames and Paeroa was played here before a fairly large crowd in beautifully fine weather. The first half-hour was evenly contested, both teams throwing the ball about. Vedder made a pretty opening and outpaced the Thames backs to the fullback, then transferring to Fiwdlay, who scored. Thames quickly evened the score when a passing bout between Coxhead, Savage and Maxwell finished in the last-named scoring. Savage converted, making the half-time score:—Thames, 5; Paeroa, 3. The Paeroa forwards were pressing in Thames' twentyfive when Devell intercepted and. outpacing the Paeroa fullback, scored between the posts. The kick failed. Hammond finished off another good movement and scored, Pearson converting. A rush by the Paeroa backs, with' Hogan, Alp and Vedder prominent, saw Hogan score in the corner. Findlay converting. From a scrum handy to Paeroa's line Thames hooked the . ball and Mcßae secured and passed to Maxwell, who scored. Coxhead secured in Paeroa's twentyfive, made an opening, and passed, to Shaw and Devell, who scored. Maxwell converted, making the final score:—Thames. 21; Paeroa, 8. Whakatane.—The referees demonstrated the rules of football in a fast and open Rugby match with a Whakatane Club team. They beat their opponents by 9 pointe to 3, the score at half-time being 3-all. There were some fine movements on both sides and the spectators were well pleased. R. Mate played a sound game for the referees in the forwards, continually breaking through the opposition. Burt played a fast, heady game on the wing and was responsible for two tries. R. Butler threw his 14 stone into the fray in fine style. Oswald and Hohapata proved sound for Whakatane. Mate converted both tries scored by Burt. Hohapata scored for Whakatane. Waihl.—A wheelbarrow derby, organised by the Waihi Rugby Union, led many more than might have attended to see the football at Rugby Park, where the principal game was between Taupiri and Waihi. Seven barrows pushed to Rugby Park, the winner being Mi Rawiri, with his passenger, G. Pennell. Large crowds lined the course. The game was won by Wa!ihi by 9 points to 8. In a junior game Auckland Suburbs. 16, beat Waihi juniore. 12. T« Avyamutu.—The two attractions under the Waipa Union's jurisdiction were the match between Rovers and Te Awamutu seniors for the Commercif.l Cup, and the third grade match, Old Boys v. High School, for the Silvester Cup. Weather conditions were good, and there was a large attendance. The senior contest was a hard one, being confined mostly to the forwards. Te Awamutu opened the scoring when T. Dalziel kicked a penalty goal, but Rovers equalised when G. Woodroofe dodged over for a try, unconverted. Time was up with the scoring even, so extra time was played, during which Rovers had the better of matters, and finally W. McKinlay dodged over from a lineout, and the game ended: Rovers, 6; Te Awamutu, 3. The Silvester Cup game was bright and interesting throughout, and just as much interest was taken in this as in the senior match. Teddy opened School's score with a penalty goal, and Westgate scored a try that Teddy converted. Just on halftime Kidd kicked a penalty goal for Old Boys. After half-time Teddy scored ft try for High School, but in the closing stages Fraser and Burchell each scored a try for Old Boys, neither being converted, and thus Scho(?J, won the cup by 11 points to !). Hamilton.—Only junior games were played in Hamilton on Saturday, the principal event being the junior championship v which was won by Old Boys, who defeated Karamu by 10 points to fi. Cambridge.—Although the Cambridge Rugby Union has concluded the 1935 season, there was a large attendance at Victoria Square, when the local bakers challenged the grocers to a match for a dinner. The game was full of interest and resulted 'in a win for the grocers by 11 points to 8. For the winners H. Carter, J. Kelly, C. Boyce scored tries, the last-named converting his own try, while C. Horscroft and fB. Bromwich scored for the bakers, A. Bromwich converting one try.
