NEW OROPI SAWMILL THE QUESTION OF ACCESS [by TELEGItAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT^ TAURANGA, Saturday A letter was received at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga County Council from Existing Forests, Limited, Auckland, in reference to the question of a metalled road to a sawmill which the company proposes to erect near Oropi. It was stated that the yearly output of the mill should be from 2,000,000 ft. to 3,000,000 ft. of timber, although it would actually have a cutting capacity of probably over twice that quantity. It would also be necessary to arrange for wharfage facilities.
The council referred the matter to a committee, to confer with a representative of the company. The county engineer was authorised to take steps in regard to the shifting of cream stands which are regarded to be in a dangerous position on roads. A motion was adopted that the building by-laws should be amended to provide for the definition of a shop or business premises area at Mount Maunganui, to embrace provisions for the erection of walls or party walls on boundaries.
The council appointed Messrs. G. E. Faulkner, W. S. Roves, J. W. Steward as caretakers of the Pahoia Reach.
