POSITION IN BRITAIN GROWTH OF EMPLOYMENT (Received September 10, 6.5 p.m.) British "Wireless RUGBY, Sept. 9 The progressive rise in the numbers of people in employment and the fall in the numbers of the unemployed continued in August. Since January, 1935, there has been a decrease in the total of the unemployed of more than 377,000 and in the whole period since 1921 —the first year for which comparable statistics are available —the reduction of the last seven months has been exceeded only in the corresponding periods of 1922 and 1923. The Ministry of Labour estimates that at August 26 there were approximately 10,424,000 insured persons aged from 16 to 64 in employment in Britain. This was 43,000 more than on July 22, and 244,000 more than a year ago. At the same date the numbers of unemployed persons on the registers in Britain totalled 1,947,964, comprising 1,533,259 wholly unemployed. 334,419 temporarily laid off, and 80,286 normally in casual employment. This total was 24,977 less than on July 22, and 188,614 less than a year ago. The month of August always shows an increase in juveniles' unemployed. This is accounted for by the registration of boys and girls who hav£ left school at the end of the summer term. Last month there was an increase of nearly 22,000 in the number of unemployed juveniles, and allowing for that increase, the number of unemployed men and women actually decreased by nearly 47,000.
