—— STRONG WINDS AND RAIN SNOW ON THE RANGES The weather report and forecast, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, was as follows :■—An in. tense cyclonic depression has been cross, ing New Zealand, , the centre to-day being east of the North Island. An anti. 1 cyclone covers eastern Australia and the western Tasman Sea, the highest pressure being south-east of Tasmania The forecast is for winds westerly at first in the far north, otherwise strong southerly winds to gales prevailing, moderating somewhat to-morrow. Seas in New Zealand waters, high south of East Cape and on the west coast of the North Island, elsewhere rough. Eastern Tasman Sea, southerly gales and high seas, but winds gradually moderating The weather is likely to be still cold and boisterous, with rain in most districts, and further heavy falls in plaoes especially on the east coast; snow on the ranges, and snow or hail showera likely also on parts of the low country in eastern areas; mainly fair, however in Westland. ■ ' SPECIAL AUCKLAND FORECAST COLD AND SQUALLY WEATHER The Government meteorologist issued to the Herald last evening: the follow- i-. ing special forecast for the Auckland Province: —Strong westerly to southwesterly winds, increasing to gales. Th e weather is likely to be cold and squally, with heavy showers and in places hail, Seas high on the west coast, and rough on the east coast. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland. —Unsettled weather was | experienced yesterday, heavy showers being frequent early in the morning. ; A fresh westerly wind prevailed until the .evening, when it moderated and veered to the south. There were intervals of bright sunshine iti the ufternoon and the temperature at 4 p.m. ; was 55deg. The barometer dropped to 29.30 in. at 4 p.m., but was rising rapidly at midnight. Christchurch. —The weather waa cold - and unsettled in Christchurch yesterday, and a strong south-wesberly wind brought frequent showers of rain. The, maximum temperature was 46 degrees. The barometer rose slightly, and registered 29.86 in. at 5 p.m. Dunedin. —Unsettled and wintry weather prevailed in Dunedin yesterday. There were frequent rain showers, and a light south-westeily breeze was blowing.
