CYCLONIC DEPRESSION GALES AND HEAVY RAIN - it:,/.;' The weather report and forecast fo r New Zealand, issued last evening by the Government meteorologist, was as follows.—An intense and extensive cyclonic; depression covers the New Zealand area, the centre to-day being north of Cook Strait. An anti-cyclone is located over south-eastern Australia The forecast is for moderate to strong' southerly winds, rising to gale force at many places. Seas in New Zealand waters rough to high. SPECIAL AUCKLAND FOB,EGAST COLD AND STORMY The Government meteorologist issued to the Herald last evening the following special forecast for the Auckland Province: —Strong westerly winds to gales, backing to southerlies. The weather is likely to be cold and stormy with heavy showers, and in plaow' hail. Seas rough to high. YESTERDAY'S WEATHER Auckland. —There was a continuation of squally westerly weather yesterday rain being experienced at frequent inl tervals and a heavy hail shower in the afternoon. Between squalls there were occasional intervals of sunshine. The temperature at 4 p.m. was 54 degrees. The barometer continued low, the reading being 29.40 in. in the afternoon, but a slight rise was recorded in the evening.

The minimum temperature on Sunday night was 46.1 degrees and the maximum yesterday 49.6 degrees. The rainfall between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. totalled .10in. Christchurch. Heavy rain fell steadily all day in Christchurch. Toward evening it stopped but the sky remained very threatening. A fresh south-west wind was blowing.

Dunedin.—Dull and overcast weather prevailed yesterday, with a light southerly breeze. The maximum temperature was 47 degrees. The barometer was steady at 29.85 until midday, but it fell several points in the afternoon.
